Why Our Concrete Slabs & Flatwork Stands Out

A well-built concrete slab starts long before the first truck pulls up — it starts with proper subgrade preparation. Central Texas soils, particularly the expansive black-clay soils common throughout the Austin metro and surrounding counties, are notorious for swelling with moisture and shrinking in drought, causing slabs to crack and shift when the subgrade isn't properly prepared. Wilson LMCS prepares subgrades correctly, compacting fill, addressing drainage, and creating a stable base that gives your concrete the best chance for long-term performance. We handle the full flatwork process: clearing and grading the site, forming the slab to your dimensions, placing rebar or wire mesh reinforcement, pouring and finishing the concrete, and applying a proper cure. We work with you to determine the right slab thickness and reinforcement for your intended use — a lightly loaded patio needs a different spec than a shop floor designed for heavy equipment. Our concrete work includes shop floors and metal building slabs, residential driveways and pads, patios and outdoor living areas, equipment pads and loading areas, RV pads, parking areas, and commercial flatwork. We'll coordinate with your building contractor, electrician, and plumber to ensure the slab is ready on schedule.

FAQ

Common Questions About Concrete Slabs & Flatwork

It depends on the intended use. A standard residential patio or walkway is typically 4" thick. Driveways are usually 4"–6". Shop floors and areas subject to vehicle or heavy equipment loads typically call for 5"–6" or more with rebar. We'll recommend the right thickness for your project.

Both add tensile strength to concrete. For light-duty residential flatwork, wire mesh may be sufficient. For driveways, shop floors, and areas carrying significant loads, rebar is the stronger choice. We'll specify the right reinforcement for your application.

Central Texas is famous for its expansive black-clay soils, which swell when wet and shrink when dry. This movement puts stress on slabs that aren't properly supported. Proper subgrade preparation, adequate thickness, and control joints all help minimize cracking.

Yes. We regularly pour slabs for metal buildings, shops, and barns. We work from your building specs to ensure the slab dimensions, anchor bolt placement, and thickness meet the building manufacturer's requirements.
